James Gunn Reveals the Major Cause Behind The Batman 2 Delay

The Batman 2

When Robert Pattinson got cast as The Caped Crusader back in 2019 for Matt Reeves’ The Batman, audiences weren’t happy with the casting he even got a lot of backlash just like previous Batman actors did but when the first trailer for The Batman was released in the DC Fandom of 2020, people were surprised of how great he and the overall movie looks but the real magic creates when the film released in 2022.

It was a massive hit for WB not only commercially but critically too, people were comparing it with The Dark Knight (2008) and this was a big deal in itself. It was expected that the sequel of The Batman would be green-lit, and that’s exactly what happened, only a month after the release of the film Matt Reeves’ announced The Batman 2 is officially in the works and was slated to release in Oct 2025, but it didn’t go as planned and the sequel was pushed to Oct 2, 2026.

The Batman 2

Yesterday, Hollywood reporter published an article revealing the most awaited The Batman sequel has been delayed again by one year and it is now set to release on Oct 1, 2027. The Co-Ceo of DC Studios James Gunn confirmed this report and revealed why it got delayed again.

Why The Batman 2 got delayed again?

When a fan asked James Gunn on Threads about The Batman 2 got delayed and asked if it’s true or not he replied:

“Sure. Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”

James Gunn also comments on the 5-year gap between the Batman films and explains that it’s common for sequels to have major yearly gaps in between.

“To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3.”

The Batman 2 will begin filming in late Summer of 2025 and will release on Oct 1, 2027, it may also no longer be titled ‘The Batman: Part ll’.
