DCEU to DCU: James Gunn Clears Up the Canon Confusion

James Gunn

As the James Gunn DCU approaches, kicking first off with Creature Commandos, written by James Gunn himself on December 5 on Max. Recently James attended NYCC and talked all about his lead DCU without disclosing anything that fans didn’t before, even creating a lot of buzz among DC fans by talking about one of the most anticipated movies of 2025, Superman.

There was a question that confused fans: whether the DCEU would be canon in the new DCU — James announced last year that some actors will be returning to play the characters they’ve played in other movies, shows and some plot points might be consistent with plots from the dozens of films, shows and animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until Creature Commandos and Superman.

This time at NYCC, DC Studios’ Co-Head James Gunn clarified this long-running puzzling question that’s been bothering fans for a while — How the new DCU will deal with the canonical DCEU events with a fresh continuity?

“We learn that other things that have happened in the past in other media have still happened. There are references to things that happened in the past. And those references then become canon in the DCU because we mention them.”

James Gunn

James Gunn explained that the new DC Universe will have some references to the past (DCEU), and those events become canon in the DCU. Let’s understand that with an example, as we know Rick Flag Jr. was killed by Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad (2022) but this particular event won’t be canon unless someone mentions it or talks about it in the new DCU.

Still confused about how it will play out in the DCU. Well, it is just that some of DC characters will return to portray that particular character again in James Gunn’s DCU, e.g. Viola Davis is confirmed to be returning as Amanda Waller in the DCU. James previously confirmed that some events from the DCEU will also be used as references in the DCU as mentioned above. So we might see something or someone from the previous DC universe, but don’t need to bother about it as this idea might be taken to retain the previous aura of the DCEU around, even if it’s a little bit
