James Gunn Just Teased a DCU Justice League Movie

Justice League

When James Gunn announced his Chapter 1 slate “Gods and Monsters” back in January 2023, he announced a total of 10 projects, in which some are currently in production, some are in active development, and some are on hold. As James often stated on threads, unless they have a script they’re confident of, they won’t start production. He’s prioritizing quality over quantity and making sure he delivers the best content possible.

The announcement made fans hyped up, but it was missing one thing: a Justice League film, although he clarified at the start of the video that what he’s about to announce is part of the first chapter, not the entire first chapter. Anyway, people speculated that there might be a Justice League film concluding the first chapter of the DCU, since then Gunn barely said anything about Justice League’s presence in the DCU, but finally he breaks his silence and gives away some interesting details about the Justice League film and their presence in the DCU.

Justice League

During an Interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn says the idea of a larger superhero team-up is on his mind. “Of course, of course,” he says. “But there is no Justice League in this world…not yet.”

When asked if his Justice League plans tie into his larger vision for the Gods and Monsters phase, he says, playfully, “Sure”.

Gunn confirmed that the Justice League does not exist, not for now at least, I mean, how could they be without Superman, and if you were wondering, they could’ve made a team of screen but that’s not possible, James already said this Superman is new in this superheroing thing. He also confirmed that the Justice League film would be part of the first chapter of the DCU.

EW also broached the Justice League subject with the Man of Steel himself, David Corenswet. In a separate conversation, citing Gunn’s responses.

“I mean, that sounds awesome,” he responds. “I don’t take it upon myself to think ahead in that kind of way, just because one would hate to get one’s hopes up about anything in particular and then have it go in another direction. What I like to do is stay blissfully ignorant, and then when James tells me what’s going to happen, I get to have a wonderful surprise. So if Justice League is in the back of his mind, that sounds great to me. I’ll put it at the back of my mind and we’ll see what happens.”
